Terriers were originally bred for hunting and killing vermin such as mice, rats, rabbits, foxes, badgers and even otters. They would perform this above or under ground. Terriers come under two main groups long legged and short legged. There are a lot of different breeds of terrier and they all have a vast range of temperaments with huge personalities. They can be feisty, brave, alert, intelligent, energetic, stubborn, determined and independent. Some can be more level headed, placid dogs. Generally they are loyal, affectionate and good natured with some of the above traits mixed in. Today, most terriers are kept as companion dogs.
